WETS Aqua Course Requirements

• Pre requisite

  Pre-requisites for candidates intending to teach in Australia and New Zealand - follow the four steps below.

  Candidates:

  1.    May enrol in an AUSTSWIM course at 16 years of age but are not eligible to receive the accreditation until they are 17 years of age.

  2.    Are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to confidently swim 25 metres.

  3.    Must provide their valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) number at the time of enrolment in order that AUSTSWIM can verify this. A USI is a reference number required by the Commonwealth statutory office (Student Identifiers Act 2014) and is obtained from the USI Registrar.

  4.    provide a current Working With Children Check (WWCC). Although this is not expressly required before enrolling, it MUST be provided prior to commencing industry training (follow the link to find individual requirements for your State/Territory) Click here

• Delivery Strategy

  The course consists of theory and practical components. The WETS Aqua Instructor course conducted by AUSTSWIM does not have any formal pre-requisites. However, it does require Aqua Instructor attributes such as:

  • the ability to work outdoors or in a humid environment
  • the ability to engage with community members
  • a specific level of pool deck fitness and endurance
  • an appreciation of movement to music
  • an enjoyment of the aquatic environment
  • basic water survival skills
  • MMM - Musicality, Movement, Motivation.

• Content

  The course is 3 days face to face (theory and practical) plus supervised on the job teaching hours and assessment. Topics include:

  • basic water safety rescues
  • class design methods
  • music mapping skills
  • active practical water sessions
  • excellent face to face quality tuition
  • knowledge - fundamentals of aqua exercise
  • refining technical pool deck presentation skills
  • WETS formula that makes designing a class simple yet effective.

     

    The Resources you receive are:

  • AUSTSWIM WETS Aqua Instructor Manual
  • 3 tracks of music
  • Creative choreography (sample routine plans)
  • Video analysis of yourself on pool deck and in the water
  • Online video footage for you to keep – routines and specific moves.

  
  

   

• Assessment

  To demonstrate competency in this course and receive a Statement of Attainment you are required to complete and submit pre and post course work which includes: 

  • Participating in a minimum of 7 aqua classes
  • Preparing and planning 3 aqua routines
  • Working side by side with industry colleagues
  • Preparing and delivering a 15 minute aqua routine on pool deck to music
  • Delivering 5 x 10 minute routines to aqua participants under supervision
  • Completing online course assessments
  • Demonstrate competence in water safety techniques

• Additional Requirements

  1. Practical teaching hours including observation, supervised teaching and verification of teaching competency.
  2. HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid - Level II First Aid including Current CPR certificate. For further information on CPR requirements please click here.
  3. Complete the Teacher Declaration by agreeing to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct
  4. Submit endorsed photo for AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence.

  
  

• Vocational Education Training

  AUSTSWIM candidates successfully completing the WETS Aqua Instructor course will be issued a statement of attainment once they have demonstrated competency in the specific skill set listed below. The skill set includes nationally recognised units of competency from the SIS10 Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package and is the national framework for skills development for the industry. 

  The skill set competencies are:

  • BSBRSK401      Identify risk and apply risk management processes
  • HLTWHS001     Participate in workplace health and safety
  • SISCAQU002    Perform basic water rescues
  • SISCAQU008    Instruct water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
  • SISFFIT008       Instruct water based fitness activities
  • SISFFIT022       Instruct aquatic sessions for specific population groups

  

  
  AUSTSWIM Accreditation, Licence and Insurance Requirements:
  The AUSTSWIM accreditation and licence requirements include additional proficiencies and course requirements.

  • AUSTSWIM WETS Aqua Basics #1 is framed under the AUSTSWIM Learning Pillars preparing the student for the specific Aqua Instructor role.  Water safety and drowning prevention strategies are an integral element of the AUSTSWIM Learning Pillars.  
  • HLTAID003 -Provide First Aid- Level II First Aid including Current CPR certificate
