ASO’s are a vital link in the provision of quality swimming and water safety programs connecting customers with program providers; essentially connecting students, parents and teachers with program management. Consistent quality service is the measure of success as an AUSTSWIM- ASO.

Frequently Asked Questions-Aquatic Service Officer

Q. How can I prepare for the course?  

A. Read all the details thoroughly and complete all the pre-course work in plenty of time before attending the course. It would also be a good idea to have a chat to someone who holds a similar position in your facility.
Q. What’s the duration of the course?  

A. The course includes pre, during and post face-to-face delivery. The face-to-face component is delivered in approximately 6 hours. The pre and post online learning and assessment is self-paced.
Q. Is this an industry recognised qualification?

A. AUSTSWIM is a registered training organisation (RTO) 104975 and will provide a Statement of Attainment for this skill set (3 units of competencies from the Community Recreation Package). An AUSTSWIM ASO Certificate will also be sent to you once all assessment tasks have been successfully completed.
Q. I read that there is pre-course work. What happens if I don't get to complete the pre-course work prior to attending?
A. It is compulsory to successfully complete the pre-course work before you attend the course. Once you enroll you will receive your pre-course login. Enrol at least 2 weeks before the start of the course - this gives you enough time to complete everything. You will be disadvantaged if you have not:
- Completed the observation task;
- Answered the scenario based questions.
You must bring these two tasks to the course as they form part of the face to face delivery. It’s a great opportunity to discuss aquatic programming situations and best fit solutions.
Q: Will I have to participate in any industry training?

A: Yes - part of the assessment requirements include supervised industry training. This is provided to you and explained in detail at the course. Again, it is a self-paced assessment task.
Q: I am already working in this role - who will sign me off?

A: A person who holds the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety accreditation would be preferable. Your manager or supervisor will be eligible to sign off your ASO requirements. Please make an appointment time with the appropriate person. It will take approximately 2 hours to work through your ASO manual and assessment with your supervisor.
Q. What happens if I am an owner/operator of a venue?

A: If you are a sole operator or manager of a venue, you can get signed of by someone at your venue who is a senior member or a peer.
Q: Are there other requirements I need before receiving the ASO certificate?

A: Yes - we require a copy of your current CPR, USI number and WWCC
Q: Does this course contribute to my Professional Development Renewal?

A: Yes - 10 hours will been allocated when all assessment criteria have been achieved.
Q: Ok - I understand that I can now use this course as PD renewal hours but why doesn't it automatically renew my licence?

A: You are correct. The ASO course with a current CPR will be sufficient PD to renew your licence. An AUSTSWIM Licence can only be automatically renewed with the successful completion of an AUSTSWIM extension course, such as Infant, Access and Inclusion etc. Extension courses make up part of the AUSTSWIM accreditation and licence, whereas the ASO course sits as part of the ‘leadership’ stream.

Assessment
Assessment includes a combination of pre- and post course tasks including:
1. Pre course assessment written work to be submitted at the course
2. At course theory delivery of group work, scenario based exercises, discussion
3. Post course on the job industry training component
Certification
On successful completion of all course requirements candidates will receive
- AUSTSWIM Aquatic Service Officer certifcate
- 10 Hours of Professional development are associated with the ASO course and can be used for your renewal requirements.
- Statement of Attainment for the following Units of Competency from the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package:
1. SISXCCS201A Provide customer service
2. SISXIND101A Work effectively in sport and recreation environments
3. SISXRSK301A Undertake risk analysis of activities
